HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood celebrates stroke month
During Stroke Awareness Month, HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood proudly recognizes the critical, life-saving work of its Comprehensive Stroke Center — and the lives it has impacted, including that of Lake Houston resident Pat Guard. Pat is more than a stroke survivor — she’s a Lake Houston legend. Known for her creativity, leadership and decades of community service. Pat has earned nearly every major local recognition, including the prestigious Athena Award, which honors women who excel in business and lift others along the way. Her impact spans generations through the arts, small business mentorship and faith-based service making her a cherished force in the region.
As a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center, HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood provides advanced, 24/7 stroke care, including rapid diagnosis, minimally invasive procedures, and intensive rehabilitation services. Over the years, the hospital has treated thousands of stroke patients, offering some of the most advanced stroke care available in Northeast Houston.
Among those patients is Pat Guard, a longtime community leader and creative entrepreneur. In 2023, Pat suffered two strokes within days — first a series of mini-strokes, followed by a major hemiplegic stroke that left her partially paralyzed. Thanks to her daughter’s quick recognition of the signs and the swift, expert response by the team at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, Pat survived — and is now thriving.
“I owe my life to this hospital,” Pat shared. “They moved fast, treated me with compassion, and set me on the road to recovery. I’m not where I was, but I’m grateful for where I am — and I’m not done yet.”
Pat’s ongoing journey is a testament to the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms early and having access to a facility equipped to act quickly. HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood’s multidisciplinary stroke team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, interventional radiologists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists who collaborate to deliver comprehensive care.
The hospital’s commitment to stroke excellence has earned it national recognition for stroke outcomes and patient satisfaction. Most importantly, it has helped countless patients like Pat return to meaningful, engaged lives. “Our team is committed to delivering the highest level of stroke care available,” said John Corbeil, CEO. “Stories like Pat’s are why we do what we do. Her strength is inspiring — and her recovery is a powerful reminder of the importance of fast, expert treatment.”
As Pat continues to inspire her community through new ventures and advocacy, she also shares an urgent message: “Know the warning signs. Know where to go. I’m living proof that getting to the right hospital in time can make all the difference.”
