Cypress, Texas  — HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress is expanding treatment options for patients living with atrial fibrillation (AFib) with the first and only system of its kind within the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Cypress area, approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

This innovative technology combines advanced mapping and ablation into one tool, allowing doctors to more precisely treat abnormal heart rhythms. It can use two types of energy, pulsed field (PF) and radiofrequency (RF), to correct AFib and a related condition called atrial flutter. In clinical trials, patients treated with this system experienced improvements in quality of life for both mental and physical well-being.

“This system allows physicians to map, ablate, and validate all with a single catheter, enhancing the safety of ablation procedures for our patients," said Dr. Tapan Rami, clinical cardiac electrophysiologist. "This game changing technology will improve safety profiles and accelerate our ability to treat patients suffering from AFib."

AFib is a progressive disease that occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat out of rhythm. As a result, blood is not pumped efficiently to the rest of the body. It is the most common atrial arrhythmia, affecting nearly 60 million people worldwide, and can lead to serious complications including heart failure, stroke and increased risk of death.

This system enables physicians to customize treatment based on a patient’s needs during an ablation procedure, using different energy sources and mapping capabilities to correct fast, abnormal heart rhythms. For many patients, this advancement could be life changing.
